STRAWPOLL: What will happen when CBOE global markets starts futures trading Bitcoin on 10 December 2017? submitted by BitcoinAllBot to BitcoinAll [link] [comments]

With under 24 hours before bitcoin futures trading starts on the big boy markets, it's time for the crusty guys to make some SERIOUS PSA's.

I've only been in the space since 2013, but I did weather the bitcoin ice age between 2013 and 2015, where the price didn't budge beyond 350, and fell to a low of around 170 at one point. Back then, this was due to ONE exchange, that represented somewhere around 80% of all trading volume, going bust.
Today, we see from the metrics, there are perhaps 12 million users of bitcoin, with only perhaps 2 million or so people who own anything more than a few hundred dollars worth. The CME and the CBOE represent utterly gigantic trading volumes. While those of us in this space have a decidedly libertarian/anarchist bend, there is no denying that establishment entities are where the money is at the moment, and in order to change that, you need to get in bed with swamp creatures every once in a while, slowly pull those swamp creatures out of the mud, and/or out them for who and what they are. The CME and the CBOE are not generally occupied by horrible people, only those who toe the establishment line for fear of losing large sums of money if they do otherwise.
All that being said: BE PREPARED FOR VOLATILITY WHEN THE CME STARTS FUTURES TRADING BITCOIN. But also be prepared for an EXPLOSION in volume. This means, huge swings in the price are possible, but GIGANTIC movements upwards will become even more the norm than it already is. This means, not hundred-dollar swings per day, or even hour; not thousand-dollar swings per day, or even hour; but perhaps 3, 4, 5-thousand-dollar swings in hours. The gigantic uptick in volume we have seen in the recent weeks may only be a tiny sliver of what is to come. From 10 billion volume peak to perhaps 50 billion volume peak. In one day, we could see the price fluctuate from 17000, up to 25000, then down to 15000.
What does this mean? It means bitcoin is edging into the hearts and minds of the general public. This COMPLETELY DEPENDS ON A STRONG BITCOIN COMMUNITY. Do not be disheartened if the price dips dramatically. Don't give up on your hodlings.
Remember why we're in this space at all: for freedom. No more endless wars funded by unaccountable central banks that operate in complete secrecy, siphoning the wealth of an unaware populace while simultaneously sending them to their deaths on the battlefield.
You are all the early adopters, and you are about to find out just what that means. Stay strong, you're not alone.
And... HODL.

Bitcoin futures trading at a not-so-high premium

The rise in volatility has made the cryptocurrency market a very competitive space as every coin strives to make the most of the active market. Bitcoin, the largest digital asset has been also a spectator of sudden volatility pushing it to a yearly peak of $12,400 on 17 August. After the sudden boost in volatility, […]

Bitcoin Futures Trading Platforms - Comparsion of Trading Fees

As i'm the perfect example of a scalper, low risk and small positions, i wanted to find out if and how much the fees would eat up my profit.
What kind of fees are applied on Trading Platforms?
Maker fees are paid when you add liquidity to our order book by placing a limit order below the ticker price for buy, and above the ticker price for sell.
Taker fees are paid when you remove liquidity from our order book by placing any order that is executed against an order on the order book.
Of course there are deposit/withdrawal fees on some platforms, but these are easy to calculate and foreseeable.

List of Trading Platforms and it's fees (A to Z)
All the fees are applied to BTC/USD Futures (Perpetual Contracts).
Binance – MF 0.02% / TF 0.04% Bitmex – MF -0.025% / TF 0.075% Bybit – MF -0.025% / TF 0.075% Deribit – MF -0.025% / TF 0.075% Digitex Futures – MF 0.00% / TF 0.00% Huobi Global – MF 0.02% / TF 0.04% Kraken – MF -0.02% / TF 0.075% OKEx – MF 0.02% / TF 0.05% Phemex – MF -0.025% / TF 0.075%
MF = Maker Fees / TF = Taker Fees
You see on some exchange you have a negative maker fee, this is because you get rewarded for adding liquidity.

Let's calculate our profitability
So let's say we enter a trade and buy 2 Bitcoins at $10500, the price rises to $10505 after a few minutes and we hop out of the trade. How much did we effectively made?
Let's compare the worst case and best case scenarios.
Worst case (OKEx) MF (2×10500 = 21000) => (21000 / 100) × 0.02 = $4.20 fees for placing your order TF (2×10505 = 21010) => (21010 / 100) × 0.05 = $10.50 fees for selling your position Net profit = $10 - $14.70 = -$4.70
Best case (Digitex Futures) MF (2x10500 = 21000) => (21000 / 100) × 0.00 = $0.00 fees for placing your order TF (2×10505 = 21010) => (21010 / 100) × 0.00 = $0.00 fees for selling your position Net profit = $10 -$0.00 = +$10.00

Conclusion
As you can see, scalping on almost all platforms is impossible unless you go for higher risk or longer term trades. The fees just make it impossible to make quick profits unless you are on the right platform.

"Have you thought about trading cryptocurrency futures to take a negative position on bitcoin?", Warren Buffett: "No, I get into enough problems with things that I think I know something about, why in the world would I take a long or short position of something that I don't know anything about?"

Excerpt from an interview:
Reporter: "Have you thought about trading cryptocurrency futures to take a negative position on bitcoin?"
Warren Buffett: "No, I get into enough problems with things that I think I know something about, why in the world would I take a long or short position of something that I don't know anything about?"
Yet, in the same interview, Buffett also states that: "In terms of cryptocurrencies, genereally, I can almost say with certainty that they will come to a bad ending."
And further that: "We don't own any, we don't short any, we'll never have a position in them."
These statements are contradictory. He says that he doesn't understand it, yet he claims that he can say with certainty that it will take "a bad ending" (whatever that means). Still, he wouldn't short it. Indeed, he would shy away from taking any position at all.
Has he formed somewhat more of a consistent opinion nowadays and expressed it?
