Chromebooks for Crypto? : CryptoCurrency

$15 an hour entry after bachelors, is this too low?

I completed a Bachelors in Information and Technology in December 2019. I did pretty good in school but am by no means a big coding guy and am more interested in IT side than computer science. I have been trading cryptocurrency for the last 3 years working for myself. I have been avoiding job offers because they make close to nothing what I’m currently making with crypto, but I really want to break into the IT field to get a more stable career and advanced my skills. I got offered a job for $15 an hour (yikes, terrible) for an entry level position. I have been applying to other with higher pay during the pandemic but my past job experience is in management/call centers so I was getting no bites. So I finally caved and accepted a low one. I am trying to just think of this as a necessary step in my career, but am having a hard time convincing myself of that because of the pay.
This job I took I can’t say I’m too excited about. But am thinking it might be a good starting point. I am just not sure if I am wasting my time and can get something better. I have a bachelors but no certs. My new job title is “Computer Repair Technician” and I will be working mainly on chromebooks and laptops for k-12 schools at a technical warehouse type setting. They are starting me off just installing cases, applying asset tags, wiring AC adapters. And then they will be moving into my repair position once I get a feel for things. That will include repairing broken screens, swapping parts, etc.
I did not imagine I would be making less than before I went back and got my bachelors at $15 an hour. But do you guys think from my brief description this is something good to get my foot into the door in an official IT position? I honestly feel I’m a bit above it, but no one else is biting so maybe I’m not. I for sure am starting on Monday, so I’m going to try it out for at least a few months. But how long do people typically stay in these entry positions before pay increases? I’m 31 and feel like I’m going too far back in the ladder of work experience. They are going to be long days for little pay (30k a year). Luckily I will still be doing my crypto trading so I am not worried about money, just that this is an unnecessary time sink.
Any input would be appreciated.

Convince me not to get a chromebook

So basically I am going to be getting a new computer in the next month or so. I am coming from a 2011ish macbook pro that I loved for years. But of recently I am moving away from apple as they have lost their edge imo and recently just switched to a new galaxy s10.
The list of activities I mainly do on the computer: -write documents -view and write emails -apply to jobs -surf the internet with multiple tabs open(3-5 at a time) -watch YouTube -stream boxing, ufc, football etc -fantasy sports drafting thru ESPN -manage and trade stocks, forex, crypto
Other than that, I am not a gamer any more so I will not really be using this for games. I am not a coder or developer.
I would like someone to tell me if chromebooks can fit my needs and maybe convince me why getting a windows 10 laptop is better?
My budget is 300-600 and what do you guys suggest I look into?
Are there new chromebooks being released in the coming months that I should wait for?
Is Chrome OS dying and I should stay away?
Thank you for your help

Developer Update #7 24/1/18 - Desktop Wallet Update

Hi, /RaiBlocks! I'm Devin Alexander Torres (GitHub, Twitter, LinkedIn) a developer and member of the Core Team since December. I've been a friend of Colin's here in Austin since 2016.
I've been interested in cryptocurrencies since at least 2013, but took an interest in RaiBlocks after starting to work on an idea I have for something of an "index fund" of cryptos. I had to experience the latest frustrating transaction times and massive fees when moving around cryptos while starting that project to really appreciate what Colin had done.
I'm sort of what you might consider a jack-of-all-trades developer, so I'll likely be all over the various projects we'll be working on, but I've recently been hard at work on a our new Electron-based desktop wallet, so let me tell you a little more about that!
The desktop wallet is a new Ember.js app wrapped in Electron. The whole app was built with extensibility in mind. Right now we have wallet creation and importing, seed mnemonic generation and backup, accounts overview, account creation, account history, sending and more. The app is already ready to actually switch between multiple wallets at some point if we ever want to allow that. I built the app from a mobile-first approach, so it's fully responsive on the desktop (this means you can resize your window and it will still look good) and since I used Bootstrap it should be easily themeable in the future. The app was also built with a11y (accessibility) and i18n (internationalization) in mind as well. This means that we've tried serve the needs of the disabled who might be using the wallet using a screen reader for example. It also means the app is fully translatable and has already been translated into Puerto Rican Spanish!
One cool feature I've implemented is that the wallet now downloads a platform dependent version of the node and a recent bootstrap on first launch, which means users will no longer have to sync more than just the latest! You'll be up and running in the amount of time it takes you to download a 1G file today.
The desktop wallet can easily switch to an endpoint in the cloud, which is actually what it does when served as a web application. The desktop wallet is actually fully capable of being our web wallet, and may be in fact. I also very early on added a Cordova wrapper to enable building iOS, Android and Windows Phone versions of the app as well. That's right, the same app can be deployed to the web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Chromebook, you name it, though we will officially only support our native iOS and Android apps.
That's just a taste of what we have in store for you, so stay tuned for more updates on the desktop wallet!

Mr. Weinberg’s company, DuckDuckGo, has become one of the feistiest adversaries of Google. Started over a decade ago, DuckDuckGo offers a privacy-focused alternative to Google’s search engine.

Student Nomad: can someone study full-time while living abroad?

---This idea was due to an earlier post that I read on rDigitalNomad, though according to uJaqqarhan I may not be the textbook nomad. Regardless, hopefully this will help me now, and will help some travelers in the future!---
Hey friends, cross-posting this to several subreddits to see who is interested in the same ideas. TL;DR - I am going to try traveling for 6 months while taking university classes, and I'd like input from people who have done it :)
Background: I've been doing online school on-and-off since 2012. I have my AA, BA, and am finishing a Graduate Certificate. I usually work out of my home country, but am now unemployed and want to stay out of the USA for the rest of my tax year. I am decently experienced in online studies as well as living out of a backpack for a couple months at a time.
Intent: I'd like to reconcile both of these ideas. Due to tax laws, I will get a nice refund if I stay out of the USA for the next 6 months. I could go and get another job, and continue school then, but I think this could be a doable experiment to see if I can get good grades in my 8-week classes while living in different countries.
Questions:
  1. Gear: What cheap laptop can get beat-up in my backpack, still have a full keyboard for writing essays, and perhaps even convert into a tablet for reading textbooks without the bulk? Battery life is key. I don't think a Chromebook or similar will work for me; I want to have full computer functionality, since I'll be writing a lot. Ideally I won't bring anything expensive, so that if it gets stolen from my Airbnb, I can replace it (and my schoolwork will be backed-up on Google Drive).
  2. Any countries in the Americas that I should NOT attempt this in, due to wacartels/infrastructure/crime/internet speeds? I am planning to work my way down from Mexico to Argentina, ending in Brazil for the last month or two. I will probably not be going to Honduras, El Salvador, or Nicaragua...sorry! I've been to Mexico, Peru, Chile, and some Caribbean islands so far in my life.
  3. I plan to trade crypto and use my GI Bill with my savings to stay afloat. I think I have enough passive income to do this for more than 6 months, but this is my initial plan. I might hate it the first month and quit, who knows. I also plan to do my last part in Brazil due to wanting to take jiu jitsu classes in the mornings (and unlimited açaí!). Anyone got some decent ideas for making money in Central/South America for a student with little-to-no skills? ;)
  4. I'm planning to do my usual 40L North Face backpack with its laptop compartment. I'll bring my old phone that I don't mind getting stolen, and I'll replace it with a flip-phone when it does. I have had great luck meeting people on Tinder (insert judgment here!) both for romance and friendship, so I will try to stay with Tinder buddies to save on Airbnb rent. Aside from Couchsurfing, since I'm not an attractive single female and I get very few responses on that, does anyone have any life hacks for getting cheap places to live? I will really only be sleeping there, so I don't need a nice hotel. I prefer to live in guest suites with locals anyway, but $20/day adds up after 6 months. Right now I plan to stay 1 week at a time to get the Airbnb discount.
  5. Flights: I have been looking on Google Flights and I see some awesome flights intra-Mexico for $28 and up, so my tentative plan is to live in a city, stay as long as the weather is nice (aiming for 75F because anything hotter means I'm sweaty!), then buy a one-way ticket to the cheapest place that is still on my destination list. Although I'd like to go from south-to-north to see the weather shift and the dialects change, I understand that sometimes we just have to snag a flight deal when it pops-up. I will also bus if needed, though I've done the bus from Chihuahua to Mazatlán before and I'm okay with buying a plane ticket from now on :P Anyone got any advice about getting cheap flights? I use Skiplagged, OneTravel, and Google Flights most of the time.
  6. Studying: though I know it would sound good to say that I'm going to wake-up early and start reading/writing, I'm also trying to see the culture and all that. I plan to do morning workouts and then head out to coffee shops and parks, finding decent WiFi to access my school's website as well as check my Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and other crypto stuff. For reading my Humanities books and finding a good blend of absorbing literature/ideas while also experiencing life in the chosen city, what advice do you travel-study veterans have?
Conclusion: I actually have no idea if anyone has done exactly this; I've seen mention of taking Open University and OSU classes while saving rent overseas, but if I can make this work I would consider doing it for the next 2 years. I am not the blogging or Instagramming type, so I probably won't create some catchy website like "The Remote University" with daily updates. This will be for me, to continue my classes and to find more passive income while seeing as many new cities as I can.
Of course I can put updates here, but the first step is doing a literature review of sorts, finding out who has been before me. If anyone knows a popular blog or Reddit post that I missed, please comment and link it! Much love, thanks for reading, and I'll update when I've taken my first flight from home :D

Ordered a Manufaturer Refurbished Acer Chromebook 14 As A First Chromebook for $187, Did I Do Bad?

I had originally bought a Y700 gaming laptop, but it seemed like a lot to carry around when I go back to school in August, and it didn't have very good battery life -not that I had expected it to-. I found that I didn't use it much for gaming beings I have a R7 1700x and 980ti in my desktop, and when I'm out I'm not super inclined to game.
I did a decent amount of research and found that the Chromebook 14 was generally the best sub $200 deal.
I've read that the Chromebook 14 now supports Android apps, has a battery life rated at 9-12 hours, and is super light in comparison to the Y700.
I'm just wondering if you all think Docs is enough to get me through school, and how well this particular Chromebook handles Android apps?
I'm kind of excited for the possibility of using Robinhood on it to trade Cryptos... If they manage not to bottom out and die beforehand.
I probably should have posted this beforehand, but I'm a glutton for punishment.
Thank you in advance!

What’s the difference between Brave and Chrome?
Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson The difference is we don't track you, or attempt to track you online. We block third party ads & trackers to protect your identity. We also block crypto-mining, malware, phishing, and more by default. And we integrate blockchain support to support your favorite sites anonymously.
3:21 PM - Sep 28, 2018
Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson Brave and Chrome utilize the same core engines (Blink and V8), which are used by many other projects as well. With brave-core, we are now using the same Skia logic for our UI. For now, we share many common UI elements. But that will change as brave-core matures.

Is sync coming sooner rather than later?
Brian R. Bondy @brianbondy Aiming for official release in Nov. But we'll see it land sooner. Brendan is right about mobile being the done part. 8:42 AM - Sep 29, 2018

Hmmm… Could Brave Android come to Chromebooks?
BrendanEich @BrendanEich Never say never... more immediate: a big-display version of Brave Android tuned for Chromebooks. 8:01 PM - Sep 29, 2018

Does Google Benefit from Ad Fraud? (Three parts!)
BrendanEich @BrendanEich Google does benefit from fraud. It got ~60% of $80B in 2017 via fees. Assume 20% fraud per @acfou. Zeroing fraud cuts G rev by >= $9.6B, material. Standards lately dominated by Google. Individually, fine people, many friends. Yet hard to work on this problem in standards process.
1:09 AM - Sep 30, 2018

BrendanEich @BrendanEich Replying to @__anoop and 3 others See https://www.slideshare.net/augustinefou/state-of-digital-ad-fraud-q2-2018/ …, Dr. Fou's estimate for fraud take in 2017 was $16.2B. Take goes to fake publishers w/ botnet or cloud fake users. Exchanges & other intermediaries turn blind eye cuz they take fee if buy side is fooled. Similarly, malware put in cheap slots pays fees. Sep 30, 2018

BrendanEich @BrendanEich To recap, money flows from buy side brands thru agencies, DSPs, exchanges, SSPs, any buy or sell side DMPs, finally to publisher if real. But fraud consists of fake pubs fooling antifraud scripts, stealing net due to real pub. Intermediaries get paid if fraudster does. Pubs lose. 1:26 AM - Sep 30, 2018

What’s after Brave? Sharing Attention Token with other apps.
BrendanEich @BrendanEich As our roadmap (update delayed but soon) says, we will share @attentiontoken with other apps after proving the model in Brave. We are realists about not taking over a market, rather uniting lead users to move standards, regulators, the world to a better iteration of the Web.
5:23 PM - Oct 1, 2018

Brave is building a better model, fits GDPR, and with less fraud.
BrendanEich @BrendanEich Sure the current model needs tracking; the question before us is whether there is a better model w/ GDPR required user consent (no cookiewall duress) that is less fraud-filled. Brave using the BAT is building one, could be others. No tracking, local data/ML matches ad in catalog.
5:26 PM - Oct 1, 2018

Some publishers see 40% revenue share. Brave wants to give 70%.
BrendanEich @BrendanEich From publishers we talk & work with, this 40% programmatic rev-share to publishers is optimistic. As noted it does not include fraud clawbacks. A far cry from 70% (app stores, Brave). 7:13 PM - Oct 1, 2018
Brave Software @brave "I believe that it is not tenable for any platform, publisher, technology vendor, or trade body, to claim that they must track people in order to generate revenue from advertising." @BrendanEich writes to the US Senate about why GDPR is a model to pursue. https://brave.com/us-gdpr-senate/ 4:48 PM - Oct 1, 2018

It’s one thing to say “don’t be evil.” “Can’t be evil” is a different level. :)
Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson There's so much more (one tweet never does it justice), but that's enough to communicate our goal of "Can't be evil," vs the familiar "Don't be evil." We wish to build solutions in such a way that we couldn't abuse the user's trust, even if we wanted to. Plus we're OS, auditable.

BAT/Brave in the News:

Brave CEO Pens Letter to Senate Committee Asking for GDPR-Like Privacy Regulation
Brendan Eich, the CEO of Brave, has written a letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation urging them to implement GDPR-like legislation in the United States.
GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and works to secure the data and privacy of all individuals within the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area ( EEA ). In addition, it addresses the exporting of personal data outside these two organizations. GDPR seeks to give individuals control over their personal information and simplify the regulatory atmosphere for international business ventures.
Based in San Francisco, Brave is a new kind of browser that allegedly offers users faster speeds and stronger security by blocking trackers and advertisements. In his letter, Eich describes GDPR as a "great leveler" and says it has allowed many new businesses in Europe to flourish by preventing larger, more established corporations from disadvantaging them.
"The GDPR's principle of 'purpose limitation' will begin to prevent dominant platforms from using data that they have collected for one purpose at one end of their business to the benefit of other parts of their business in a way that currently disadvantages new entrants," Eich writes.

Basic Attention Token (BAT) Overview: 4 million MAU, co-op with Civic and regular AMAs with community
The project recently passed 4 million monthly active users, with over 21 thousand verified publishers on board as well. To celebrate these milestones, Brave organized a community contest called “Best of the Brave”. Brave Browser recently announced their intention to cooperate with a decentralized digital identification platform called Civic on matters related to the verification of publishers. Continuing the AMA tradition they’ve recently started, BAT will hold another one on October 4th. This time, the questions can be directed at David Temkin, Chief Product Officer at Brave and the man responsible for delivering the Brave browser product to consumers. The question submitting thread can be found here. BAT project will hold a public meet-up in Pennsylvania, USA on October 16th, where the visitors will be given a chance to review the Brave Browser and BAT tokens, how they work and how will they be used in the future.

Google Privacy Flaws Set Up An Opportunity For Brave and Basic Attention Token
Google has again been criticized for breaching user data in collecting private user information. Now according to Matthew Green, a professor at Johns Hopkins University and team member of ZCash, Google is using new, and potentially unprincipled methods for its data collecting.
According to the professor, Google is breaching trust using Chrome. This breach could be setting up Brave browser for wide adoption. As more users look to keep their information private, comes the need for browsers like Brave. The browser offers a safer and potentially more secure browsing experience.

News You Should Know:

Europe is drawing fresh battle lines around the ethics of big data
It’s been just over four months since Europe’s tough new privacy framework came into force. You might believe that little of substance has changed for big tech’s data-hungry smooth operators since then — beyond firing out a wave of privacy policy update spam, and putting up a fresh cluster of consent pop-ups that are just as aggressively keen for your data.
But don’t be fooled. This is the calm before the storm, according to the European Union’s data protection supervisor, Giovanni Buttarelli, who says the law is being systematically flouted on a number of fronts right now — and that enforcement is coming.

Irish privacy watchdog to investigate Facebook data breach
Ireland’s data protection authority is expected to launch a formal investigation into the Facebook data breach affecting 90 million people worldwide, the first major test of Europe’s new data protection rules, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

Brave Browser CEO Calls for GDPR Laws in U.S.
On September 28, 2018, Brendan Eich, CEO of Brave, and co-founder of Mozilla Firefox wrote to the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to encourage the adoption of a General Data Protection Regulation.
In the letter, Eich compels the US Senate to consider a European style model which allows for greater protection of the data of private citizens. He calls the GDPR a “great leveler” which will enable companies like his own to compete at a high level in the marketplace.

Chromebooks for Crypto?

I have recently been looking to buy a new laptop and I was wondering if a chromebook would be adequate for trading crypto. I use Bittrex, Coinomi Wallet (I can change wallets if that helps), Coinbase and Poloniex. Would all of these things work on a chromebook? Thanks

Sending Failed Bitcoin Cash Split

All, I've downloaded my bcash wallet from manager. I did everything just as instructed, split wallet, copied receive address, gone to main bcash wallet, sent transaction, set highest fee, confirmed on device and "sending failed" is all I get. I tried many times with lesser amounts but get the same result. I'm current with 1.3.1 firmware too. Should I wait till later in the day? Is it a traffic issue? Also, I'm using a new chromebook I only use for crypto moves and trades

[uncensored-r/CryptoCurrency] "Omisego is a project on a totally different level"

The following post by divine_blood2 is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been openly removed.
The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:

The original post's content was as follows:
I was going crazy trying to avoid discussing omg because I think purely in moontalk. Then I see posts in ethtrader talking about eth going to $1T cap in a few months, and everyone nods in agreement.
https://np.reddit.com/ethtradecomments/7p6rl8/eth_price_has_just_entered_the_bottom_of_a_new/dsez5vd/
You can't talk price in omg sub other than the daily. However, mentioning omg hitting $1k-$2k each or much higher before end of year in the omg daily, you get "FUCK OFF MOONBOIS!" "GET REAL OMGCUCK!" "SPECULATIVE MOONTALK WILL ONLY HARM OMG!" So I had refrained myself. Until now. That eth comment infected me.
Why can't we have staking fees that generate $50-100 per omg? This would make omg yearly staking yield at 1:20 ratio, a ratio comparable to something like kucoin shares and yield. Kucoin pay 0.001 of exchange volume fees towards their hodler, currently about 0.0028 per token base on 280mil daily volume and growing. $1.022 annual.
Omg will be a platform, decentralized exchange, staking coin and more; it has the potential to do far more than a small exchange like kucoin. It is social good that will solve real-world problems of financial services, credit systems, cash in/out gateways, unit of accountings trade. As a platform, it will grow beyond what it was intended. Amazon started as online bookseller and grew into aws and cloud services, publisher, retailer, product development, streaming services, logistics and distribution, warehousing, etc. Google expanded from a search engine to chromebook, gmail, youtube, web analytics, advertising, google map and earth, etc.
The primary utility for omg as a proof-of-stake, is needed for public, permissionless decentralizatiion security to protect against double-spend and other attacks. Proof-of-stake is a security consensus model that has clear costs and incentives. Researchers spent decades working on digital currencies, and finally the effective solution was created by Satoshi through proof-of-work mining, of which proof-of-stake was derived without the need for intensive mining equipment. Compared to fee-less and nonmining/no-reward crypto, which has unclear economic consensus model, even if they include proof-of-work because it has no associated costs to attackers; the value of the coin itself is not necessarily enough for a compelling economic incentive, especially for those exiting; time will determine how secure or vulnerable they are.
99% of crypto is shitcoin, we all know this; everyone trying to pump everyone else to buy into the mania frenzy and dumping (aside, most people should not put more than 10% of their networth into crypto; crypto is very risky). Omg is the 1% that will survive a meltdown and actually has gods working on and supporting it:
Omg will launch on tendermint with a roadmap to implement plasma. The chain is expected to go live on 2nd 2018 but we could see it as early as end of February. Thousands of merchants, including all of Mcdonalds Thailand, will be shifted to the omgchain. Omg's potential target market is an ambitious billions of smartphone users. There's speculation that omg is going after part of the forex market which does $5 trillion in volume per day. Omise CeO, Jun's medium article lays out what problems they are trying to solve (limited crypto accessibility; closed networks that can't or find it difficult to financially transact with each other; etc) and envisions how omgchain will be used: https://medium.com/@jun_omise/omise-omisego-strategy-vol-01-5c7269bb2008.
Jun is also telling people directly what's up: We are going to deliver a big win for whole crypto community in 2018. Watch #OMG and HODL!
https://twitter.com/jun_omise/status/945239429693632513?lang=en
2018 will be the year of crypto. We will see the real deal; omg will be one of the kings and queens. Metaphorically, perhaps owning omg would be akin to being able to own a part of the internet, where omgchain becomes de facto decentralized chain for the world. If this is the situation, within several years' time, we can very well surpass a ridiculous utra mega-cap beyond imagining.

Google Deceptively Tracks Students’ Internet Browsing

This is an automatic summary, original reduced by 65%.
EFF examined Google's Chromebook and Google Apps for Education, a suite of educational cloud-based software programs used in many schools across the country by students as young as seven years old.
While Google does not use student data for targeted advertising within a subset of Google sites, EFF found that Google's "Sync" feature for the Chrome browser is enabled by default on Chromebooks sold to schools.
Google doesn't first obtain permission from students or their parents and since some schools require students to use Chromebooks, many parents are unable to prevent Google's data collection.
Google's practices fly in the face of commitments made when it signed the Student Privacy Pledge, a legally enforceable document whereby companies promise to refrain from collecting, using, or sharing students' personal information except when needed for legitimate educational purposes or if parents provide permission.
EFF's filing with the FTC also reveals that the administrative settings Google provides to schools allow student personal information to be shared with third-party websites in violation of the Student Privacy Pledge.
"We commend schools for bringing technology into the classroom. Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education have enormous benefits for teaching and preparing students for the future. But devices and cloud services used in schools must, without compromise or loopholes, protect student privacy," said EFF Staff Attorney Sophia Cope.
