Hi guys, I'm bullish on Ethereum and I'd like to buy more ETH on margin. In theory Poloniex is the most liquid market, however, the only trading pair available there for margin trading is ETH/BTC, which means that even if ETH becomes more valuable in $ you could still lose money if you go long ETH and the ETH/BTC rate goes down. This is regardless of the currency posted, either ETH or BTC. If you post ETH as a collateral is even worse because the liquidation point is even more unpredictable. So I was thinking of using Bitfinex. Do you guys have experience with margin trading on that exchange? If I trade on the ETH/USD pair what are the financing risks?
Margin trading ETH on Poloniex has its value based in BTC. I was wondering...if the value of BTC (as measured in USD) hypothetically doubled but ETH only gains 30% (as measured by USD), would it post a loss for me since the value of ETH decreased when measured in BTC?
People using Kraken to margin trade ETH, how do you set Stop Loss or Take Profit orders?
Kraken disabled advanced orders like Stop Loss or Take Profit last year. I wonder how they expect people to margin trade without these order types. Do they really expect us to keep watching the price every minute and settle positions manually in real time? If you have been margin trading on Kraken, how have you been doing it? Is there a third party tool (like Coinigy or a bot) that you use for placing pseudo margin orders (i.e. orders are only sent to the exchange when certain trigger conditions are met) on Kraken?
PSA: Understanding the dangers of Poloniex's margin trading.
Hi guys, My apologies if you've already heard this. Poloniex allows for margin to be posted in Ether. This has some side effects that people may not be thinking about in this rally. If you are long Ether and you are margin trading Eth this post is for you. Normal margin trading has some nuance to it that new folks don't get but posting your security in the security you are margin trading makes things even more volatile. OK so if you believe Eth will rise and you post 1 BTC (in BTC) of margin. You can buy up to 2.5x your margin in Eth. For this example, let's assume you are risk averse and only borrow 1 BTC to buy Eth with. Assuming Eth is at 0.01, you can buy 100 Eth. Cool. Poloniex will close your position when the price drops so that 20% of your margin + the trade value will cover the 1 BTC loan. This means that if Eth reaches 0.002 Polo will do a market sale of your Eth (netting below 0.002/Eth most likely) and will deduct the difference from you 1 BTC margin deposit. This is not what will happen if you posted the margin in Eth! If you post your margin in Eth and you post 100Eth (worth 1BTC at 0.001), and you buy 100 Eth as above, Polo will estimate the liquidation price at 0.002ish. The problem is that if the Eth price falls, so does the value of your margin. This means that as the price drops, Polo will keep upping the estimated liquidation price! So in this case, if the price falls to 0.008, margin value is now only 0.8BTC and unrealised losses are -0.2BTC, this means your margin will be calculated at 60% even though the price has only dropped 20%. At a 40% drop you margin will be worth 0.6BTC, your losses will be 0.4BTC (because polo calculates the loan in BTC) and your position will be automatically closed. You 100Eth margin buy will be liquidated for < 0.6BTC and your margin will be liquidated up to the point where it can cover the original 1 BTC loan. Since the Eth price has dropped 66% (best case) of your margin will be liquidated at 0.006 to cover the difference. Leaving you with only about 33% (or less) of your original Eth! And this after half the price fluctuation you were lead to believe your margin would cover! TL;DR If you post margin in Ether and buy Ether on margin, the liquidation price is wrong! It is much closer than you suspect!
What is the cheapest/easiest way to leverage long Eth on DEFI?
I immediately thought of dydx because their interface is slick and it offers an easy way to margin trade ETH. They offer low borrow rates for the ETH which is attractive. However the trade expires in 28 days and there's no way to add more collateral to lower the liquidation price if needed. I'm looking for a way to long eth but be able to add more collateral to lower the liquidation price and keep the position open. Maker comes to mind, but I read that I need to do the calculations and process is manual. Their interest rates are much higher than on dydx and have fluctuated to extremely high levels in the past. Any recommendations?

Which exchange should be used for margin trading ?
Hello guys, I've been margin trading eth/eur on Kraken for few months now and I am not satisfied on several points : 1) Kraken can't always offer margin trades because of insufficient funds, especially since the userbase is getting bigger; 2) During big dip, passing orders is barely possible probably because of queries overload; 3) Sometimes Kraken does not execute my stop-loss (market) orders, for now I didn't suffer big losses because of that but I prefer not to take risks when talking about margin trading... I guess some of theses issues are shared by other exchanges but I would like to gather feedbacks from redditors margin trading somewhere else than Kraken, especially where volumes are significant. Thanks
