The Corea milestone of the Streamr Network went live in late 2019. Since then a few people in the team have been working on an academic whitepaper to describe its design principles, position it with respect to prior art, and prove certain properties it has. The paper is now ready, and it has been submitted to the IEEE Access journal for peer review. It is also now published on the new Papers section on the project website. In this blog, I’ll introduce the paper and explain its key results. All the figures presented in this post are from the paper.
The reasons for doing this research and writing this paper were simple: many prospective users of the Network, especially more serious ones such as enterprises, ask questions like ‘how does it scale?’, ‘why does it scale?’, ‘what is the latency in the network?’, and ‘how much bandwidth is consumed?’. While some answers could be provided before, the Network in its currently deployed form is still small-scale and can’t really show a track record of scalability for example, so there was clearly a need to produce some in-depth material about the structure of the Network and its performance at large, global scale. The paper answers these questions.
Another reason is that decentralized peer-to-peer networks have experienced a new renaissance due to the rise in blockchain networks. Peer-to-peer pub/sub networks were a hot research topic in the early 2000s, but not many real-world implementations were ever created. Today, most blockchain networks use methods from that era under the hood to disseminate block headers, transactions, and other events important for them to function. Other megatrends like IoT and social media are also creating demand for new kinds of scalable message transport layers.

The latency vs. bandwidth tradeoff

The current Streamr Network uses regular random graphs as stream topologies. ‘Regular’ here means that nodes connect to a fixed number of other nodes that publish or subscribe to the same stream, and ‘random’ means that those nodes are selected randomly.
Random connections can of course mean that absurd routes get formed occasionally, for example a data point might travel from Germany to France via the US. But random graphs have been studied extensively in the academic literature, and their properties are not nearly as bad as the above example sounds — such graphs are actually quite good! Data always takes multiple routes in the network, and only the fastest route counts. The less-than-optimal routes are there for redundancy, and redundancy is good, because it improves security and churn tolerance.
There is an important parameter called node degree, which is the fixed number of nodes to which each node in a topology connects. A higher node degree means more duplication and thus more bandwidth consumption for each node, but it also means that fast routes are more likely to form. It’s a tradeoff; better latency can be traded for worse bandwidth consumption. In the following section, we’ll go deeper into analyzing this relationship.

Network diameter scales logarithmically

One useful metric to estimate the behavior of latency is the network diameter, which is the number of hops on the shortest path between the most distant pair of nodes in the network (i.e. the “longest shortest path”. The below plot shows how the network diameter behaves depending on node degree and number of nodes.

Network diameter
We can see that the network diameter increases logarithmically (very slowly), and a higher node degree ‘flattens the curve’. This is a property of random regular graphs, and this is very good — growing from 10,000 nodes to 100,000 nodes only increases the diameter by a few hops! To analyse the effect of the node degree further, we can plot the maximum network diameter using various node degrees:
Network diameter in network of 100 000 nodes
We can see that there are diminishing returns for increasing the node degree. On the other hand, the penalty (number of duplicates, i.e. bandwidth consumption), increases linearly with node degree:

Number of duplicates received by the non-publisher nodes
In the Streamr Network, each stream forms its own separate overlay network and can even have a custom node degree. This allows the owner of the stream to configure their preferred latency/bandwidth balance (imagine such a slider control in the Streamr Core UI). However, finding a good default value is important. From this analysis, we can conclude that:
  • The logarithmic behavior of network diameter leads us to hope that latency might behave logarithmically too, but since the number of hops is not the same as latency (in milliseconds), the scalability needs to be confirmed in the real world (see next section).
  • A node degree of 4 yields good latency/bandwidth balance, and we have selected this as the default value in the Streamr Network. This value is also used in all the real-world experiments described in the next section.
It’s worth noting that in such a network, the bandwidth requirement for publishers is determined by the node degree and not the number of subscribers. With a node degree 4 and a million subscribers, the publisher only uploads 4 copies of a data point, and the million subscribing nodes share the work of distributing the message among themselves. In contrast, a centralized data broker would need to push out a million copies.

Latency scales logarithmically

To see if actual latency scales logarithmically in real-world conditions, we ran large numbers of nodes in 16 different Amazon AWS data centers around the world. We ran experiments with network sizes between 32 to 2048 nodes. Each node published messages to the network, and we measured how long it took for the other nodes to get the message. The experiment was repeated 10 times for each network size.
The below image displays one of the key results of the paper. It shows a CDF (cumulative distribution function) of the measured latencies across all experiments. The y-axis runs from 0 to 1, i.e. 0% to 100%.
CDF of message propagation delay
From this graph we can easily read things like: in a 32 nodes network (blue line), 50% of message deliveries happened within 150 ms globally, and all messages were delivered in around 250 ms. In the largest network of 2048 nodes (pink line), 99% of deliveries happened within 362 ms globally.
To put these results in context, PubNub, a centralized message brokering service, promises to deliver messages within 250 ms — and that’s a centralized service! Decentralization comes with unquestionable benefits (no vendor lock-in, no trust required, network effects, etc.), but if such protocols are inferior in terms of performance or cost, they won’t get adopted. It’s pretty safe to say that the Streamr Network is on par with centralized services even when it comes to latency, which is usually the Achilles’ heel of P2P networks (think of how slow blockchains are!). And the Network will only get better with time.
Then we tackled the big question: does the latency behave logarithmically?
Mean message propagation delay in Amazon experiments
Above, the thick line is the average latency for each network size. From the graph, we can see that the latency grows logarithmically as the network size increases, which means excellent scalability.
The shaded area shows the difference between the best and worst average latencies in each repeat. Here we can see the element of chance at play; due to the randomness in which nodes become neighbours, some topologies are faster than others. Given enough repeats, some near-optimal topologies can be found. The difference between average topologies and the best topologies gives us a glimpse of how much room for optimisation there is, i.e. with a smarter-than-random topology construction, how much improvement is possible (while still staying in the realm of regular graphs)? Out of the observed topologies, the difference between the average and the best observed topology is between 5–13%, so not that much. Other subclasses of graphs, such as irregular graphs, trees, and so on, can of course unlock more room for improvement, but they are different beasts and come with their own disadvantages too.
It’s also worth asking: how much worse is the measured latency compared to the fastest possible latency, i.e. that of a direct connection? While having direct connections between a publisher and subscribers is definitely not scalable, secure, or often even feasible due to firewalls, NATs and such, it’s still worth asking what the latency penalty of peer-to-peer is.

Relative delay penalty in Amazon experiments
As you can see, this plot has the same shape as the previous one, but the y-axis is different. Here, we are showing the relative delay penalty (RDP). It’s the latency in the peer-to-peer network (shown in the previous plot), divided by the latency of a direct connection measured with the ping tool. So a direct connection equals an RDP value of 1, and the measured RDP in the peer-to-peer network is roughly between 2 and 3 in the observed topologies. It increases logarithmically with network size, just like absolute latency.
Again, given that latency is the Achilles’ heel of decentralized systems, that’s not bad at all. It shows that such a network delivers acceptable performance for the vast majority of use cases, only excluding the most latency-sensitive ones, such as online gaming or arbitrage trading. For most other use cases, it doesn’t matter whether it takes 25 or 75 milliseconds to deliver a data point.

Latency is predictable

It’s useful for a messaging system to have consistent and predictable latency. Imagine for example a smart traffic system, where cars can alert each other about dangers on the road. It would be pretty bad if, even minutes after publishing it, some cars still haven’t received the warning. However, such delays easily occur in peer-to-peer networks. Everyone in the crypto space has seen first-hand how plenty of Bitcoin or Ethereum nodes lag even minutes behind the latest chain state.
So we wanted to see whether it would be possible to estimate the latencies in the peer-to-peer network if the topology and the latencies between connected pairs of nodes are known. We applied Dijkstra’s algorithm to compute estimates for average latencies from the input topology data, and compared the estimates to the actual measured average latencies:
Mean message propagation delay in Amazon experiments
We can see that, at least in these experiments, the estimates seemed to provide a lower bound for the actual values, and the average estimation error was 3.5%. The measured value is higher than the estimated one because the estimation only considers network delays, while in reality there is also a little bit of a processing delay at each node.

Conclusion

The research has shown that the Streamr Network can be expected to deliver messages in roughly 150–350 milliseconds worldwide, even at a large scale with thousands of nodes subscribing to a stream. This is on par with centralized message brokers today, showing that the decentralized and peer-to-peer approach is a viable alternative for all but the most latency-sensitive applications.
It’s thrilling to think that by accepting a latency only 2–3 times longer than the latency of an unscalable and insecure direct connecion, applications can interconnect over an open fabric with global scalability, no single point of failure, no vendor lock-in, and no need to trust anyone — all that becomes available out of the box.
In the real-time data space, there are plenty of other aspects to explore, which we didn’t cover in this paper. For example, we did not measure throughput characteristics of network topologies. Different streams are independent, so clearly there’s scalability in the number of streams, and heavy streams can be partitioned, allowing each stream to scale too. Throughput is mainly limited, therefore, by the hardware and network connection used by the network nodes involved in a topology. Measuring the maximum throughput would basically be measuring the hardware as well as the performance of our implemented code. While interesting, this is not a high priority research target at this point in time. And thanks to the redundancy in the network, individual slow nodes do not slow down the whole topology; the data will arrive via faster nodes instead.
Also out of scope for this paper is analysing the costs of running such a network, including the OPEX for publishers and node operators. This is a topic of ongoing research, which we’re currently doing as part of designing the token incentive mechanisms of the Streamr Network, due to be implemented in a later milestone.
I hope that this blog has provided some insight into the fascinating results the team uncovered during this research. For a more in-depth look at the context of this work, and more detail about the research, we invite you to read the full paper.
If you have an interest in network performance and scalability from a developer or enterprise perspective, we will be hosting a talk about this research in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for more details on the Streamr social media channels. In the meantime, feedback and comments are welcome. Please add a comment to this Reddit thread or email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

Online Bitcoin Trading: Discover The Keys To Making A Powerful Earnings Trading Bitcoin

Action 1 - Comprehending Bitcoin And The Block-Chain

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer payment system, otherwise called electronic cash or virtual currency. It provides a twenty-first century option to traditional banking. Exchanges are made through "e wallet software application". The bitcoin has in fact overturned the conventional banking system, while running beyond federal government guidelines.
Bitcoin utilizes modern cryptography, can be provided in any fractional denomination, and has a decentralized circulation system, remains in high need worldwide and provides numerous unique benefits over other currencies such as the United States dollar. For one, it can never ever be garnished or frozen by the bank( s) or a federal government company.
Back in 2009, when the bitcoin deserved simply 10 cents per coin, you would have turned a thousand dollars into millions, if you waited simply 8 years. The variety of bitcoins offered to be bought is restricted to 21,000,000. At the time that this short article was composed, the overall bitcoins in flow was 16,275,288, which indicates that the portion of overall bitcoins "mined" was 77.5%. at that time. The present worth of one bitcoin, at the time that this short article was composed, was $1,214.70 USD.
According to Costs Gates, "Bit coin is amazing and much better than currency". Bitcoin is a de-centralized type of currency. There is no longer any requirement to have actually a "relied on, third-party" included with any deals. By taking the banks out of the formula, you are likewise removing the lion's share of each deal cost. In addition, the quantity of time needed to move cash from point A to point B, is lowered formidably.
The biggest deal to ever occur utilizing bitcoin is one hundred and fifty million dollars. This deal happened in seconds with very little charge's. In order to move large amounts of cash utilizing a "relied on third-party", it would take days and expense hundreds if not countless dollars. This discusses why the banks are strongly opposed to individuals purchasing, offering, trading, moving and investing bitcoins.
Just.003% of the worlds (250,000) population is approximated to hold a minimum of one bitcoin. And just 24% of the population understand what it is. Bitcoin deals are gotten in chronologically in a 'blockchain' simply the method bank deals are. Blocks, on the other hand, resemble specific bank declarations. Simply put, blockchain is a public journal of all Bitcoin deals that have actually ever been performed. It is continuously growing as 'finished' blocks are contributed to it with a brand-new set of recordings. To utilize standard banking as an example, the blockchain resembles a complete history of banking deals.

Action 2 - Establishing Your E Wallet Software Application Account

As quickly as you produce your own special e wallet software application account, you will have the capability to move funds from your e wallet to a receivers e wallet, in the type of bitcoin. If you want to utilize a bitcoin ATM to withdraw funds from your account, basically you will connect your e wallet 'address' to the selected Automated Teller Machine e wallet 'address'. To help with the transfer of your funds in bitcoin to and from a trading platform, you will just connect your e wallet 'address' to the e wallet 'address' of your picked trading platform. In reality, it is a lot easier than it sounds. The knowing curve in relation to utilizing your e wallet, is really brief.
To establish an e wallet, there are a myriad of business's online that use safe, safe, totally free and turn-key e-wallet services. An easy Google search will assist you discover the best e wallet software application for you, relying on what your requirements are precisely. Lots of people get going utilizing a "blockchain" account. This is complimentary to establish and extremely protected. You have the choice of establishing a two-tier login procedure, to even more boost the security and security, in relation to your e wallet account, basically securing your account from being hacked into.
There are lots of choices when it pertains to establishing your e wallet. An excellent location to begin is with a business called QuadrigaCX. You can discover them by doing a Google search. Quadrigacx utilizes a few of the most strict security procedures that presently exist. Moreover, Bitcoins that are moneyed in QuadrigaCX are saved in freezer, utilizing a few of the most safe and secure cryptographic treatments possible. To put it simply, it is an extremely safe location for your bitcoin and other digital currencies.
In order to withdraw cash in your regional currency, from your e wallet, you are needed to find a bitcoin ATM, which can typically be discovered in regional companies within a lot of significant cities. Bitcoin ATM's can be found by doing a basic Google search.

Action 3 - Purchase Any Fractional Denomination Of Bitcoin

To purchase any quantity of bitcoin, you are needed to handle a digital currency broker. Similar to any currency broker, you will need to pay the broker a charge, when you acquire your bitcoin. It is possible to purchase.1 of bitcoin or less if that is all that you wish to acquire. The expense is just based upon the existing market price of a complete bitcoin at any offered time.
There are a myriad of bitcoin brokers online. A basic Google search will permit you to quickly source out the very best one for you. It is constantly an excellent concept to compare their rates prior to continuing with a purchase. You need to likewise verify the rate of a bitcoin online, prior to finding a place to buy bitcoin, as the rate does tend to vary regularly.

Step 4 - Keep Away From Any Trading Platfrom Promising Unrealistic Returns To Unwary Financiers

Discovering a respectable bitcoin trading business that provides a high return is vital to your online success. Making 1% each day is thought about a high return in this market. Making 10% each day is difficult. With online bitcoin trading, it is practical to double your digital currency within ninety days. You should prevent being tempted by any business that is providing returns such as 10% daily. This kind of a return is not practical with digital currency trading. There is a business called Coinexpro that was using 10% daily to bitcoin traders. And it wound up being a ponzi plan. If it's 10% each day, leave. The abovementioned trading platform seemed really advanced and discovered as being genuine. My recommendations is to concentrate on trading your bitcoin with a business that uses affordable returns such as 1% daily. There will be other business that will try to separate you from your bitcoin utilizing unethical techniques. Be extremely mindful when it pertains to any business that is using impractical returns. When you move your bitcoin to a recipient, there is actually absolutely nothing your can do to get it back. You need to make sure that your selected trading business is completely automated & incorporated with blockchain, from invoice to payment. More notably, it is vital that you find out to distinguish genuine trading chances from deceitful "business's" that are specialists when it concerns separating it's customers from their cash. The bitcoin and other digital currencies are not the concern. It is the trading platforms that you should work out care with, prior to turning over your hard-earned cash.
Your ROI ought to likewise be upwards of 1%+ daily due to the fact that the trading business that you are providing your bitcoin to, is more than likely earning upwards of 5%+ each day, usually. Your ROI needs to likewise be immediately moved into your "e-wallet" at routine periods, throughout your agreement term. There is just one platform that I feel comfy utilizing. It pay's each bitcoin investotrader 1.1% daily in interest in addition to 1.1% each day in capital. This kind of a return is staggering compared to what you would make with standard monetary markets, nevertheless, with crypto currency, it prevails. A lot of banks will payment 2% annually!
If you are needed to carry out tiresome activities such as logging into your account, sending out e mails, clicking links etc, you certainly require to keep looking for an appropriate trading business that uses a set-it-and-forget-it kind of platform, as they definitely exist.

Crypto Sellers Continue To Dominate, Putting Bitcoin’s Price At Stake

Crypto Sellers Continue To Dominate, Putting Bitcoin’s Price At Stake
The Leader In Cryptocurrencies Is Expected To Drop Below $7,500 Before An Upwards Push
Last week saw substantial price fluctuations across the crypto sector. Crypto sellers are most active during the morning hours, pushing the price of crypto assets down. The swing pushed down ATOM and TEZOS with around 5%, while NEO, LINK, and BAT received a five-six percent price boost during last week’s price adjustment.
Signs of a bearish run on cryptos are already showing – Bitcoin lost a percent of its dominance, to secure 65,96 BTC dominance as of press time. The total market capitalization also took a hit, dropping from $249.4 billion to $238.3 billion. Trading volumes also shrunk in size – from $81 billion to $66 billion in the course of the past week.
Despite the market shrinkage and possible bearish Q4 of 2019, Switzerland-based crypto exchange SIX listed a crypto exchange-traded product, which is created by the Tezos Foundation and Amun AG. The product would be tied to the price of Tezos (XTZ). Google also revealed its plans to enter the world of digital finance in cooperation with Citygroup Inc. The goal – to create digital checking accounts, which would set off in 2020, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Crypto trading experts, however, are not optimistic about Bitcoin jumping over the $8,800 resistance level. If Bitcoin bears continue to test support zones, the bullish resistance might crack, and the result would be even further correction. In the last 24 hours, Bitcoin tested both $8,900 and $8,960, but with minimal effect. According to the Confluence indicator, the first critical support zone would be in the $8,6452-$8,732 area. Upward correction, however, is not an easy task, as indicators like SMA and Bollinger bands suggest serious resistance at $8,900. And if Bitcoin bulls don’t push to $9,000+, Bitcoin might fall to $7,200. The fall, however, is not that bad, given the fact many investors are seeking to buy Bitcoin at lower prices, thus – an increase in demand and price.
Bitcoin’s current levels do not provide a secure haven for the world’s top cryptocurrency. Mike McGlone, an analysis expert at Bloomberg, the current price fluctuations retrace the bearish period from 2018. “There are still leftovers from the 2017 parabolic price movements, which are keeping Bitcoin afloat.”, McGlone added.
Ethereum, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, shows the most significant signs of bearish price movements, as the market rejected a price above $188. If Ethereum loses ground at $184, the bears would most probably push the price to the $180 critical support zone.
Ripple continues the descent from the previous week, hitting lows of $0,258. Despite the negative price movement, Ripple shows excellent signs of liquidity, which could mitigate the effect of the bearish stance of the #3 in cryptocurrencies.

Educate Yourself - My Top Picks for news sources, YouTube channels, and podcasts

Why do I need to know what is going on in the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain? I'm just here to trade and make money.
I saw someone post a couple of days ago about how they have held Ethereum for a while, but had recently "done some research" and discovered that Ethereum was Turing complete and that "surely this must be one of Ethereum's most important features." At that moment, I realized how many people who post here have no idea what the hell they are talking about. If this post can help us become collectively smarter and more informed, and thereby elevate the quality of the discussion in this community, then it will have served its purpose.
If you want to get smart on any topic, you need to learn and keep learning from others who are knowledgeable. Things evolve incredibly quickly in the world of crypto and it is very easy to fall out of the loop on the latest happenings. Since most of you have money on the line (in the form of ETH holdings), that should be all of the incentive you need to stay informed. Every effective traditional investor I have ever met researches the hell out of every stock they buy (before they buy it), but also keeps in the know on every major development that company and its competitors have. This is doubly important in the world of crypto where markets can move much faster and the potential for scams and major disruption are much higher.
But what about ethtrader? Can't I just get all of my news here?
Getting all your news from ethtrader (especially the Daily) is like getting all of your news while standing in line at the grocery store, talking to other people who are reading the National Enquirer. Sure, you may happen upon a useful tidbit of knowledge, but you may also get wrong info that leads you to make bad decisions if you are not informed. But one thing is for sure: it is entertaining.
My Top 5 News Source Picks
There is no TL;DR for developing real wisdom and insight. Start reading full articles on a regular basis for topics related to crypto/blockchain. At a minimum, put the sites below into a folder on your browser's bookmarks tab and open them daily. Or get an RSS reader and make sure you methodically read every single article that comes out on these sites. Newsify is a great RSS reader for iOS users. For either iOS or Android, you could check out Feedly.
Honorable Mentions: You may also want to check out TrustNodes, but their content feels a bit more editorial-ish. There are also many great posts from devs on Medium. Sign up for an account and they'll start e-mailing you some good picks based upon your reading history.
My Top 5 YouTube Channel Picks
Honestly, there are so many YouTube channels these days, I can't keep up with them. I'll often watch the suggested content from YouTube as a way to discover new vloggers.
Honorable Mentions: Love him or hate him, you can't ignore Andreas...good for quick hits on crypto-philosophy. Real Crypto recently caught my attention as well, with excellent quality TA. Chris Dunn is also very well-established and solid for TA. DataDash is also very informative for ICO analysis and TA. I also like MrYukonC, who is a mod here and talks about topics from this sub on occasion. He only posts when he has something to say (which is fairly episodically), but I think that is a good thing.
My Top 3 Podcast Picks
I only have time to listen to so many podcasts, but here are the three that I listen to on a regular basis.
Honorable Mention: Many folks also mentioned that they like the Ether Review, which I also listen to when the topic is of interest.
That's it. Hope you all found that helpful. If you have any information sources you'd recommend, please share them!
EDIT: Made a few corrections and added two additional sources I left out initially.

There are couple of unique features like transferring funds between social accounts (atm it works with Telegram, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Twitch) ( If you get a donation as a streamer on Twitch, you can re-send it to your viewers or send it to someone via Twitter :) Feel free to reach out and ask any questions about these projects.
Digibyte has the ability for smart contract support. I bring this up as it has been a question asked before. This smart contract support is based on the same language as Bitcoin Script. There currently are no good docs or examples which is something a few of the core devs are going to be working on next once the mobile wallets are shipped. Decred Journal – September 2018

Note: you can read this on GitHub (link), Medium (link) or old Reddit (link).

Development

Final version 1.3.0 of the core software was released bringing all the enhancements reported last month to the rest of the community. The groundwork for SPV (simplified payment verification) is complete, another reduction of fees is being deployed, and performance stepped up once again with a 50% reduction in startup time, 20% increased sync speed and more than 3x faster peer delivery of block headers (a key update for SPV). Decrediton's integrations of SPV and Politeia are open for testing by experienced users. Read the full release notes and get the downloads on GitHub. As always, don't forget to verify signatures.
dcrd: completed several steps towards multipeer downloads, improved introduction to the software in the main README, continued porting cleanups and refactoring from upstream btcd.
Currently in review are initial release of smart fee estimator and a change to UTXO set semantics. The latter is a large and important change that provides simpler handling, and resolves various issues with the previous approach. A lot of testing and careful review is needed so help is welcome.
Educational series for new Decred developers by @matheusd added two episodes: 02 Simnet Setup shows how to automate simnet management with tmux and 03 Miner Reward Invalidation explains block validity rules.
Finally, a pull request template with a list of checks was added to help guide the contributors to dcrd.
dcrwallet: bugfixes and RPC improvements to support desktop and mobile wallets.
Developers are welcome to comment on this idea to derive stakepool keys from the HD wallet seed. This would eliminate the need to backup and restore redeem scripts, thus greatly improving wallet UX. (missed in July issue)
Decrediton: bugfixes, refactoring to make the sync process more robust, new loading animations, design polishing.
Politeia: multiple improvements to the CLI client (security conscious users with more funds at risk might prefer CLI) and security hardening. A feature to deprecate or timeout proposals was identified as necessary for initial release and the work started. A privacy enhancement to not leak metadata of ticket holders was merged.
Android: update from @collins: "Second test release for dcrandroid is out. Major bugs have been fixed since last test. Latest code from SPV sync has been integrated. Once again, bug reports are welcome and issues can be opened on GitHub". Ask in #dev room for the APK to join testing.
A new security page was added that allows one to validate addresses and to sign/verify messages, similar to Decrediton's Security Center. Work on translations is beginning.
Overall the app is quite stable and accepting more testers. Next milestone is getting the test app on the app store.
iOS: the app started accepting testers last week. @macsleven: "the test version of Decred Wallet for iOS is available, we have a link for installing the app but the builds currently require your UDID. Contact either @macsleven or @raedah with your UDID if you would like to help test.".
Nearest goal is to make the app crash free.
Both mobile apps received new design themes.
dcrdata: v3.0 was released for mainnet! Highlights: charts, "merged debits" view, agendas page, Insight API support, side chain tracking, Go 1.11 support with module builds, numerous backend improvements. Full release notes here. This release featured 9 contributors and development lead @chappjc noted: "This collaboration with @raedahgroup on our own block explorer and web API for @decredproject has been super productive.".
Up next is supporting dynamic page widths site wide and deploying new visual blocks home page.
Trezor: proof of concept implementation for Trezor Model T firmware is in the works (previous work was for Model One).
Ticket splitting: updated to use Go modules and added simnet support, several fixes.
docs: beginner's guide overhaul, multiple fixes and cleanups.
decred.org: added 3rd party wallets, removed inactive PoW pools and removed web wallet.
@Richard-Red is building a curated list of Decred-related GitHub repositories.
Welcome to new people contributing for the first time: @klebe, @s_ben, @victorguedes, and PrimeDominus!
Dev activity stats for September: 219 active PRs, 197 commits, 28.7k added and 18.8k deleted lines spread across 6 repositories. Contributions came from 4-10 developers per repository. (chart)

Network

Hashrate: started and ended the month around 75 PH/s, hitting a low of 60.5 and a new high of 110 PH/s. BeePool is again the leader with their share varying between 23-54%, followed by F2Pool 13-30%, Coinmine 4-6% and Luxor 3-5%. As in previous months, there were multiple spikes of unidentified hashrate.
Staking: 30-day average ticket price is 98 DCR (+2.4). The price varied between 95.7 and 101.9 DCR. Locked DCR amount was 3.86-3.96 million DCR, or 45.7-46.5% of the supply.
Nodes: there are 201 public listening nodes and 325 normal nodes per dcred.eu. Version distribution: 5% are v1.4.0(pre) dev builds (+3%), 30% on v1.3.0 (+25%), 42% on v1.2.0 (-20%), 15% on v1.1.2 (-7%), 6% on v1.1.0. More than 76% of nodes run v1.2.0 and higher and therefore support client filters. Data as of Oct 1.

ASICs

Obelisk posted two updates on their mailing list. 70% of Batch 1 units are shipped, an extensive user guide is available, Obelisk Scanner application was released that allows one to automatically update firmware. First firmware update was released and bumped SC1 hashrate by 10-20%, added new pools and fixed multiple bugs. Next update will focus on DCR1. It is worth a special mention that the firmware source code is now open! Let us hope more manufacturers will follow this example.
A few details about Whatsminer surfaced this month. The manufacturer is MicroBT, also known as Bitwei and commonly misspelled as Bitewei. Pangolinminer is a reseller, and the model name is Whatsminer D1.
Bitmain has finally entered Decred ASIC space with their Antminer DR3. Hash rate is 7.8 TH/s while pulling 1410 W, at the price of $673. These specs mean it has the best GH/W and GH/USD of currently sold miners until the Whatsminer or others come out, although its GH/USD of 11.6 already competes with Whatsminer's 10.5. Discussed on Reddit and bitcointalk, unboxing video here.

Integrations

Meet our 17th voting service provider: decredvoting.com. It is operated by @david, has 2% fee and supports ticket splitting. Reddit thread is here.
For a historical note, the first VSP to support ticket splitting was decredbrasil.com:
@matheusd started tests on testnet several months ago. I contacted him so we could integrate with the pool in June this year. We set up the machine in July and bought the first split ticket on mainnet, using the decredbrasil pool, on July 19. It was voted on July 30. After this first vote on mainnet, we opened the tests to selected users (with more technical background) on the pool. In August we opened the tests to everyone, and would call people who want to join to the #ticket_splitting channel, or to our own Slack (in Portuguese, so mostly Brazilian users). We have 28 split tickets already voted, and 16 are live. So little more than 40 split tickets total were bought on decredbrasil pool. (@girino in #pos-voting)
KuCoin exchange listed DCBTC and DCETH pairs. To celebrate their anniversary they had a 99% trading fees discount on DCR pairs for 2 weeks.
Three more wallets integrated Decred in September:
ChangeNow announced Decred addition to their Android app that allows accountless swaps between 150+ assets.
Coinbase launched informational asset pages for top 50 coins by market cap, including Decred. First the pages started showing in the Coinbase app for a small group of testers, and later the web price dashboard went live.

Adoption

The birth of a Brazilian girl was registered on the Decred blockchain using OriginalMy, a blockchain proof of authenticity services provider. Read the full story in Portuguese and in English.

Marketing

Advertising report for September is ready. Next month the graphics for all the ads will be changing.
Marketing might seem quiet right now, but a ton is actually going on behind the scenes to put the right foundation in place for the future. Discovery data are being analyzed to generate a positioning strategy, as well as a messaging hierarchy that can guide how to talk about Decred. This will all be agreed upon via consensus of the community in the work channels, and materials will be distributed.
Next, work is being done to identify the right PR partner to help with media relations, media training, and coordination at events. While all of this is coming up to speed, we believe the website needs a refresher reflecting the soon to be agreed upon messaging, plus a more intuitive architecture to make it easier to navigate. (@Dustorf)

Events

Attended:
Upcoming:
We'll begin shortly reviewing conferences and events planned for the first half of 2019. Highlights are sure to include The North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami (Jan 16-18) and Consensus in NYC (May 14-16). If you have suggestions of events or conferences Decred should attend, please share them in #event_planning. In 2019, we would like to expand our presence in Europe, Asia, and South America, and we're looking for community members to help identify and staff those events. (@Dustorf)

Markets

In September DCR was trading in the range of USD 34-45 / BTC 0.0054-0.0063. On Sep 6, DCR revisited the bottom of USD 34 / BTC 0.0054 when BTC quickly dropped from USD 7,300 to 6,400. On Sep 14, a small price rise coincided with both the start of KuCoin trading and hashrate spike to 104 PH/s. Looking at coinmarketcap charts, the trading volume is a bit lower than in July and August.
As of Oct 4, Decred is #18 by the number of daily transactions with 3,200 tx, and #9 by the USD value of daily issuance with $230k. (source: onchainfx)
Interesting observation by @ImacallyouJawdy: while we sit at 2018 price lows the amount locked in tickets is testing 2018 high.

The New York State Office of the Attorney General posted a study of 13 exchanges that contains many insights.
A critical vulnerability was discovered and fixed in Bitcoin Core. Few days later a full disclosure was posted revealing the severity of the bug. In a bitcointalk thread btcd was called 'amateur' despite not being vulnerable, and some Core developers voiced their concerns about multiple implementations. The Bitcoin Unlimited developer who found the bug shared his perspective in a blog post. Decred's vision so far is that more full node implementations is a strength, just like for any Internet protocol.

Why I Am Holding Litecoin (LTC)

I would like to share why I am holding Litecoin (LTC) and why I classify it as a triple AAA asset. (Triple AAA is the highest rating an asset can receive.) There are only 3 assets that are currently classified in my book as triple AAA assets. (Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum) Remember this is my personal opinion and you should always do your own research and come up with your own assessment before investing.
Created by Charles Lee in October of 2011, Litecoin is a scrypt-based digital currency. Now I could ramble on about Litecoin stats and the pros/cons compared to Bitcoin but that won't get us anywhere. Just because we have another crypto-currency doesn't necessarily mean it's competitive to Bitcoin or any other asset for the matter. I believe Litecoin has already achieved a status quo that would likely give it a 'permanent' place in crypto. With that said, I would expect Litecoin to continue to grow for decades and perhaps even centuries.
When you look at the typical asset in the market it generally consists of startups, experiments and hobbies. Even larger organizations like Ethereum, Ripple and NEO are likely to plateau when the market cap reaches the hundreds of billions or even near a trillion dollars. But what about assets like Bitcoin and Litecoin? If an organization or company can reach hundreds of billions or even a trillion in market cap, where would that put a currency/commodity? And what if that commodity is supported by the worlds largest financial institutions?
You have probably heard the saying 'Litecoin is the Silver to Bitcoin' and 'Bitcoin is digital gold' which honestly is probably not all that far from the truth. It has been said that in order for Bitcoin to achieve the same market cap as Gold, it would have to achieve a market cap of over $7 trillion.. Will that be the case? Nobody knows.. But if Litecoin is the Silver to Bitcoin, then how high could the market cap of Litecoin actually get?
When your talking about a currency/commodity with limited supply, especially ones like Bitcoin and Litecoin, there really is no 'known' limit to how high it can grow. (This is unprecedented territory.) With massive financial firms like Goldman Sachs and Fidelity looking to treat crypto as investment vehicles, the future seems very bright for AAA assets.
In partnership with Coinbase, Fidelity implemented on its website the option to display holdings in Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum. - CNBC Aug 9th
Goldman Sachs is reportedly investigating into the plan of launching a cryptocurrency trading platform to provide sufficient liquidity towards institutional and retail traders. “In response to client interest in digital currencies, we are exploring how best to serve them in the space,” - Goldman Sachs Oct 1st, 2017
Now let's not get ahead of ourselves.. Nobody can say for certain that 'Litecoin' will make investors wealthy... However we can take the best calculated risks to ensure we are reliably correct. Looking at the overall picture, without a doubt I feel Litecoin is clearly around for the long-term. And when I say long-term I don't mean a few years, I mean there's a good chance Litecoin will be around for decades. How many asset's out there can you say with confidence will be around for decades? There aren't many...
“Some of you might be wondering: Why am I here today? I’m here because I love this stuff... all that the future might hold.” - Abigail Johnson, CEO Fidelity
So the biggest question I suppose would be, 'What makes Litecoin so special compared to the other cryptocurrencies?' Well to answer that question let's list some highlights.
Looking at Litecoins market cap it is sitting at around $5.5 billion USD. Now i'll just speculate a little bit here.. But I believe the majority of Litecoins market cap comes from massive financial institutions and not just the typical investor. These unknown entities whom have invested billions into Litecoin, are likely the same people planning to bring Litecoin to mainstream investors. Keep in mind we are extremely early in the crypto and everyone is getting in position, even mainstream itself. In addition, I believe the average investor has overlooked Litecoin and the focus has been more or less on Bitcoin/Altcoins.
Understanding the risks
Of course with any investment there are always risks. In the event Litecoin doesn't make it into the mainstream investment channels, then I think it would become a collectors coin long-term rather than a currency/commodity. Aside from BTC, If you are invested in any other digital currencies (not companies) then this is a risk worth noting. (I may cover this topic in a future post.)
This was a difficult post to write because there was a lot to say and not a lot of ways to say it. I am sure there will be a handful of people who will disagree with this post, but as always.. this is just my opinion. The bottom line is, bitcoin might be popular and grabbing a lot of attention, but bitcoin is not the only currency/commodity that is going to make major investors, firms and brokers wealthy.
Regards,
BTC2018

Network

Hashrate: rapid growth from ~4,000 TH/s at the beginning of the month to ~15,000 at the end with new all time high of 17,949. Interesting dynamic in hashrate distribution across mining pools: coinmine.pl share went down from 55% to 25% while F2Pool up from 2% to 44%. [Note: as of June 6, the hashrate continues to rise and has already passed 22,000 TH/s]
Staking: 30-day average ticket price is 91.3 DCR (+0.8), stake participation is 46.9% (+0.8%) with 3.68 million DCR locked (+0.15). Min price was 85.56. On May 11 ticket price surged to 96.99, staying elevated for longer than usual after such a pump. Locked DCR peaked at 47.17%. jet_user on reddit suggested that the DCR for these tickets likely came from a miner with significant hashrate.
Nodes: there are 226 public listening and 405 normal nodes per dcred.eu. Version distribution: 45% on v1.2.0 (up from 24% last month), 39% on v1.1.2, 15% on v1.1.0 and 1% running outdaded versions.

ASICs

Obelisk team posted an update. Current hashrate estimate of DCR1 is 1200 GH/s at 500 W and may still change. The chips came back at 40% the speed of the simulated results, it is still unknown why. Batch 1 units may get delayed 1-2 weeks past June 30. See discussions on decred and on siacoin.
@SiaBillionaire estimated that 7940 DCR1 units were sold in Batches 1-5, while Lynmar13 shared his projections of DCR1 profitability (reddit).
A new Chinese miner for pre-order was noticed by our Telegram group. Woodpecker WB2 specs 1.5 TH/s at 1200 W, costs 15,000 CNY (~2,340 USD) and the initial 150 units are expected to ship on Aug 15. (pow8.comtranslated)
Another new miner is iBelink DSM6T: 6 TH/s at 2100 W costing $6,300 (ibelink.co). Shipping starts from June 5. Some concerns and links were posted in these two threads.

Integrations

A new mining pool is available now: altpool.net. It uses PPLNS model and takes 1% fee.
Another infrastructure addition is tokensmart.io, a newly audited stake pool with 0.8% fee. There are a total of 14 stake pools now.
Exchange integrations:
OpenBazaar released an update that allows one to trade cryptocurrencies, including DCR.

Placeholder Ventures announced that Decred is their first public investment. Their Investment Thesis is a clear and well researched overview of Decred. Among other great points it noted the less obvious benefit of not doing an ICO:
By choosing not to pre-sell coins to speculators, the financial rewards from Decred’s growth most favor those who work for the network.
Alex Evans, a cryptoeconomics researcher who recently joined Placeholder, posted his 13-page Decred Network Analysis.

Community Discussions

Community stats: Twitter 39,118 (+742), Reddit 8,167 (+277), Slack 5,658 (+160). Difference is between May 5 and May 31.
Reddit highlights: transparent up/down voting on Politeia, combining LN and atomic swaps, minimum viable superorganism, the controversial debate on Decred contractor model (people wondered about true motives behind the thread), tx size and fees discussion, hard moderation case, impact of ASICs on price, another "Why Decred?" thread with another excellent pitch by solar, fee analysis showing how ticket price algorithm change was controversial with ~100x cut in miner profits, impact of ticket splitting on ticket price, recommendations on promoting Decred, security against double spends and custom voting policies.
@R3VoLuT1OneR posted a preview of a proposal from his company for Decred to offer scholarships for students.
dcrtrader gained a couple of new moderators, weekly automatic threads were reconfigured to monthly and empty threads were removed. Currently most trading talk happens on #trading and some leaks to decred. A separate trading sub offers some advantages: unlimited trading talk, broad range of allowed topics, free speech and transparent moderation, in addition to standard reddit threaded discussion, permanent history and search.
Forum: potential social attacks on Decred.
Slack: the #governance channel created last month has seen many intelligent conversations on topics including: finite attention of decision makers, why stakeholders can make good decisions (opposed to a common narrative than only developers are capable of making good decisions), proposal funding and contractor pre-qualification, Cardano and Dash treasuries, quadratic voting, equality of outcome vs equality of opportunity, and much more.
One particularly important issue being discussed is the growing number of posts arguing that on-chain governance and coin voting is bad. Just a few examples from Twitter: Decred is solving an imagined problem (decent response by @jm_buirski), we convince ourselves that we need governance and ticket price algo vote was not controversial, on-chain governance hurts node operators and it is too early for it, it robs node operators of their role, crypto risks being captured by the wealthy, it is a huge threat to the whole public blockchain space, coin holders should not own the blockchain.
Some responses were posted here and here on Twitter, as well as this article by Noah Pierau.

Markets

The month of May has seen Decred earn some much deserved attention in the markets. DCR started the month around 0.009 BTC and finished around 0.0125 with interim high of 0.0165 on Bittrex. In USD terms it started around $81 and finished around $92, temporarily rising to $118. During a period in which most altcoins suffered, Decred has performed well; rising from rank #45 to #30 on Coinmarketcap.
The addition of a much awaited KRW pair on Upbit saw the price briefly double on some exchanges. This pair opens up direct DCR to fiat trading in one of the largest cryptocurrency markets in the world.
An update from @i2Rav:
We have begun trading DCR in large volume daily. The interest around DCR has really started to grow in terms of OTC quote requests. More and more customers are asking about trading it.
Like in previous month, Decred scores high by "% down from ATH" indicator being #2 on onchainfx as of June 6.

Bitmain released an ASIC for Equihash (archived), an algorithm thought to be somewhat ASIC-resistant 2 years ago.
Three pure PoW coins were attacked this month, one attempting to be ASIC resistant. This shows the importance of Decred's PoS layer that exerts control over miners and allows Decred to welcome ASIC miners for more PoW security without sacrificing sovereignty to them.
Upbit was raided over suspected fraud and put under investigation. Following news reported no illicit activity was found and suggested and raid was premature and damaged trust in local exchanges.

@sumiflow made good progress on correcting Decred market cap on several sites:
speaking of market cap, I got it corrected on coingecko, cryptocompare, and worldcoinindex onchainfx, livecoinwatch, and cryptoindex.co said they would update it about a month ago but haven't yet I messaged coinlib.io today but haven't got a response yet coinmarketcap refused to correct it until they can verify certain funds have moved from dev wallets which is most likely forever unknowable (slack)

Economics focused blog to bridge academics+developers with the general public

Hi all,
Cryptoeconomics has been constantly growing. With increased amounts of money being pumped into the world of cryptocurrencies there are bound to be interests in crypto-economics as a whole.
As such I've started >> https://cryptoeconomics.asia << (No it isn't just for Asian readers. In fact an overwhelming amount of my readers are from the USA and EU!)
Purpose of the site:
Principles of the site:
About the author: I thought that it would be awesome to document while observing the revolutionary change that we will be experiencing in our lifetime. This is because of blockchain developments. At the micro level we have developments that optimize individual incentives, an example would be Buterin's many videos on cryptoeconomics.
The amazing thing is that blockchain can be applied for everything we experience. Some ethereum based systems has already been establishing foundations to trade solar, oil & gas. Countries such as Switzerland and Singapore, banking financial centers have too taken tremendous steps to experiment with blockchain as a framework. (You guys already know this)
My vision: The reduction of asymmetric information through the blockchain framework can solve many matching issues we experience today.
I do not claim to have any answers. Heck most of the readers of this subreddit would have been in the industry longer than I have been alive. But what I can do is to bridge the gap between verified sources of research and put some normative thought to steer perspectives into thinking about the macro view of crypto developments.
Thank you all for your time. If you have any normative pieces or research in progress that you would like me to look into/write about do let me know through the contact page on the blog.
